Sunshine Millions V Recap
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 27, 2007) –
California-breds won half of the eight races on Sunshine Millions V Day
Saturday, highlighted by McCann’s Mojave’s thrilling upset in the $1
million Classic at Gulfstream Park and champion Lava Man’s return to the
winner’s circle in the $500,000 Turf at Santa Anita.
Cal-breds also won the $300,000
Filly & Mare Sprint at Gulfstream Park by Shaggy Mane and the $250,000
Oaks at Santa Anita by Mistical Plan. A Sunshine Millions record on-track
crowd of 36,355 was in attendance, with a total mutual handle of more than
$20 million.
Financially, Cal-breds pocketed
$1,637,500 of the $3.6 million purse for the series of stakes races
restricted to horses bred in California and Florida. In the point total
competition between the two states, Florida edged California, 37-35, for
the second consecutive year.
In addition to sweeping the top
three positions in the Oaks, Cal-breds finished second in the $500,000
Filly & Mare Turf (Memorette), the $300,000 Sprint (Proud Tower Too) and
the $250,000 Dash (Idiot Proof).
Lava Man ($3.40 to win) and
Mistical Plan ($6.20) were the only favorites to win. McCann’s Mojave
($69.80) was the longest-shot winner.
