$300,000 Sunshine Millions Ocala
Stud Farm HALLANDALE, Fla. (Jan. 27, 2007) – Former claimer Shaggy Mane took the lead shortly after the start and never looked back, running off with Saturday’s $300,000 Sunshine Millions Ocala Stud Farm Filly & Mare Sprint at Gulfstream Park. Shaggy Mane is a 4-year-old by Bertrando, out of the Bel Bolide mare Witchy, was bred by Arnold Family Trust, is owned by IEAH Stables, Robbins and Kwong, trained by Don Chatlos and was ridden by Mark Guidry. “It was a runaway, just like the Bears in the Super Bowl,” Chatlos said. “The owners picked this filly out (private purchase) just for this race. Unfortunately, we had to fill in a race at Hollywood Park that wasn’t her best distance. We’ll sit down and see where we go from here.” Shaggy Mane has six wins in nine starts, earnings of $281,483 and was coming off a fifth in the Nov. 24 Cat’s Cradle, having earlier won the W.P. Kyne Handicap. Shaggy Mane, a full sister to the stakes-placed Resident Alien, was claimed out of her maiden win, her fourth career start, for $12,500 at Santa Rosa last August. She then reeled off three consecutive wins “She took me to the front. That’s the way she is,” said Guidry. “She ran a great race and it was her day today.” She ran the six furlongs in 1:09.31 and won by 7¾ lengths at odds of nearly 9-1.
