Cal-breds Loaded for Sprint
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 21, 2007) –
Defending champion Bordonaro and millionaire Proud Tower Too lead a
powerhouse California-bred lineup in Saturday’s $300,000 Sunshine
Millions Padua Stables Sprint at Santa Anita.
Bordonaro is by Memo, out of the
Rajab mare Miss Excitement and was bred by owners Fred Carrillo and Dan
Cassella. He has nine wins in 13 starts, earnings of $750,794 and is
coming off a fourth in the Nov. 4 Breeders’ Cup Sprint, having won this
race last year at Gulfstream Park.
Proud Tower Too is by Proud Irish,
out of the Irish Tower mare Dora’s Tower and was bred by owner Tricar
Stables. He has seven wins in 20 starts, earnings of $1,645,572 and is
coming off a third in the Jan. 1 El Conejo, his first race since winning
the Mar. 25 Grade I Dubai Golden Shaheen.
Areyoutalkintome is by Smokester,
out of the Storm Bird mare Andrea Gail, was bred by John Toffan and
Trudy McCaffery and is owned by Manzani and Sarno. He has nine wins in
41 starts, earnings of $874,135 and is coming off a second in the Jan. 1
El Conejo. The $10,000 Barretts purchase was ninth in this race last
year and third in the race in 2005.
Del Mar Yearling Sale graduate Red
Warrior is by Benchmark, out of the Plugged Nickle mare Sparkling Nickle,
was bred by Madera Thoroughbreds & Kjelstrom and is owned by Miguel
Rubio. He has four wins in 24 starts, earnings of $362,393 and is coming
off a fifth in the El Conejo. The $57,000 Del Mar purchase was 10th in
this race a year ago after winning it in 2005.
Grade I winner Debonair Joe, the
only Cal-bred late nomination, is by Ole, out of the Debonair Roger mare
Malita, was bred by Craig Lewis and Mira Loma Thoroughbred Farm and is
owned by Gary and Cecil Barber. He has eight wins in 43 starts, earnings
of $510,245 and is coming off a second when claimed out of a Jan. 13
$40,000 claimer.
Souvenir Evening is by Souvenir
Copy, out of the Devil’s Bag mare Evening Starlight, was bred by Betty
Mabee and is owned by Merv Griffin Ranch. He has three wins in six
starts, earnings of $78,000 and is coming off a three-race win streak.
The leading Florida-bred contender
is Nightmare Affair.
