ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 28, 2006) – California-bred favorite Da Stoops
scored what track announcer Trevor Denman called “an amazing victory” in
Saturday’s $250,000 Sunshine Millions Pepsi Dash for 3-year-olds at
Santa Anita.
The Del Mar Yearling Sale graduate is by Distorted Humor, out of the
Kingdom of Spain mare Glamorous Lady, was bred by Malibu Valley Farms,
is owned by Watson or Weitman Performances, trained by Bob Baffert and
was ridden by Victor Espinoza.
Despite bobbling at the start, he led by five lengths turning for
home and finished the six furlongs under a hand ride in 1:08.94 at odds
of 6-5.
The 7 1/2-length victory was his third in eight starts, following an
8 ¾-length rout in the Dec. 26 California Breeders’ Champion Stakes, and
raised his earnings to $301,470. Fellow Cal-bred Brite Maneuvers, third
in the Cal Breeders’, rallied for third.
“I didn’t expect him to do what he did last time,” said Baffert.
“This colt’s got some serious gears. He’s really fast. He’s the quickest
Cal-bred I’ve ever trained.
