Cal-breds Want Bite of Apple in
Turf
ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 21, 2003) –
Turkish Prize returns to the scene of his California Cup Mile win Saturday
when he leads the California contingent in the $500,000 Barretts/CTBA Turf
on the Sunshine Millions card at Santa Anita.
Turkish Prize won the Cal Cup Mile
two races after being claimed for $62,500, then was third in the
Sensational Star Handicap. He is by Prized, out of the Turkoman mare
Turkish Gipsy, and was bred by Cardiff Farm Management and Bobby Ng. He
has 11 wins in 41 starts and earnings of more than $600,000.
Spinelessjellyfish ended a 13-race
losing streak by winning the Jan. 5 Sensational Star Handicap under new
jockey Julie Krone. He is an 8-year-old son of Skywalker, out of the
Desert Wine mare Silky Sand Sammy, was bred by Cardiff Farm Management and
trained by Jenine Sahadi. The Sensational Star was his 10th win overall in
34 races, boosting his career earnings to $807,533.
Ninebanks is a multiple stakes
winner who bounced back after a seventh-place finish in the Cal Cup Mile
with a second place in the Forty Niner Handicap at Golden Gate. He is by
Smokester, out of the With Approval mare Nataka, and was bred by Trudy
McCaffery and John Toffan. His two stakes wins came on the turf at Bay
Meadows and he has earnings of $324,293.
Lucky Molar is a multiple stakes
winner coming off a fifth-place finish in the Dec. 28 Gallant Fox Handicap
at Aqueduct. The 7-year-old was coming off a victory in the $147,000
Valedictory Handicap at 1 ¾ miles at Woodbine. Lucky Molar is by Wheatly
Hall, out of the Wing Out mare Landalucky, and was bred by Jack Van Berg.
He has seven wins in 58 starts and career earnings of $497,867. He won the
Seagrams Cup Aug. 7.
Adminniestrator is coming off a
Dec. 19 optional claimer win after a third in the Cal Cup Mile. The
6-year-old son of Incinderator, out of the Golden Eagle II mare Admiral
Minnie, was bred by Fred Sahadi. He won the Quicken Tree Stakes on Gold
Rush Day.
Surprise Halo is on the
also-eligible list. He won a Nov. 16 optional claimer. He is by Glomar,
out of the Overskate mare Kickshaw, and was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Van Rose.
He has 11 wins in 25 starts and is looking for his first stakes win.
The morning-line favorite at 7-5 is
Florida-bred Forbidden Apple.
