Continental Red Heads Classic Cal-breds
HALLANDALE, Fla. (Jan. 21, 2003) –
Continental Red leads a California-bred contingent of four in Saturday’s
$1 million Ocala Breeders Sales Co. Classic, the third and featured
Sunshine Millions race on the Gulfstream Park card.
Continental Red is the 4-1 second
choice on the morning line. He is a 6-year-old gelding by Flying
Continental, out of the Glaros mare Sharp Looking Lady, was bred by Mr.
and Mrs. Wes Fitzpatrick and owned by Sharon Fitzpatrick. Having won the
Great State Challenge Classic in December, he has career earnings of
$830,853, with six wins in 46 starts.
Long Gone Con will be looking for
his first stakes win in the $1 million Classic. He is a 5-year-old gelded
son of Restless Con, out of the Zein mare Very Much the Lady, and was bred
by John Tobin. He has four career wins and earnings of more than $200,000.
Slippery When Bet, third in the
California Cup Classic, is coming off a second-place finish in a Dec. 28
allowance race. He is a 5-year-old son of Russian Courage, out of the
Miller’s Mate mare Slip With Me, and was bred by Robert Moreno.
Grey Memo has only two since July
2001, but they were big ones – the Godolphin Mile in Dubai and the Grade
II San Diego Handicap. In the other 16 races over that span, he has been
out of the money in 11 of those races. He is a 6-year-old by Memo, out of
the Snow Chief mare B. Mozelle, and was bred by Ridgeley Farm.
Florida’s best hope in the Classic
is lukewarm 7-2 morning-line choice Best of the Rest.
