BLACK BART

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Apr. 24, 2004) – Arizona invader Black Bart led throughout and held off a determined but belated stretch duel with Lennyfromalibu and Continental Red to win Saturday’s $150,000 TVG Khaled Stakes for California-breds on the Gold Rush V card at Hollywood Park.

Black Bart is a 5-year-old gelding by Stage Colony, out of the Pirate’s Bounty mare Lyrical Pirate, was bred by Ed and Sharon Hudon and owned by Thomas Metzger Sr. Black Bart was trained by Troy Bainum and ridden by Sandi Gann, the first woman jockey to win a Gold Rush race.

It was Black Bart’s fifth win in the last six races and seventh in 26 overall, his career earnings now $246,580. He was claimed from his breeders for $16,000 last December. In six races since then, his only loss was a second by a head in the Turf Paradise Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

Black Bart ran the 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.68, missing the stakes record by eight-hundredths of a second, and went off at odds of 6-1.

Lennyfromalibu and millionaire Continental Red dead-heated for second.
