$175,000 John C. Mabee Cal Cup Mile
UNUSUAL SUSPECT
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2007) –
Longshot Unusual Suspect bolted out of the pack in midstretch and held off
defending champion Epic Power to win Saturday’s $175,000 John C. Mabee
California Cup Mile at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.
Unusual Suspect is a 3-year-old by
Unusual Heat, out of the Crested Wave mare Penpont, was bred by David
Abrams, foaled at Old English Rancho and is owned by Barry, David and Dyan
Abrams. He was ridden by Joe Talamo and trained by Barry Abrams.
“Over the years, the Cal Cup Mile
has been a great race for me,” said Barry Abrams, who trained 2003 winner
Lennyfrommalibu.
Unusual Suspect has five wins in 18
starts, earnings of $379,136 and was coming off a fourth in the Oct. 13
Oak Tree Derby. He ran the mile on turf in 1:33.89 and won by a
half-length at odds of 12-1.
Epic Power was second and Swift
Winds was third.
