SIERRA SUNSET
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2007) –
Northern California Yearling Sale graduate Sierra Sunset gamely held off
the charge of favored My Redeemer to win Saturday’s $125,000 Bob Benoit
California Cup Juvenile Stakes for 2-year-olds at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.
Sierra Sunset is by Bertrando, out
of the Pirate’s Bounty mare Toot Sweet, was bred by Marty and Pam Wygod,
was foaled at River Edge Farm and is owned by Lebherz, Mariani, Schmitt
and Wirth. The win was the second consecutively for the sire, as well as
the breeders, who also bred Distaff winner Gentle Charmer. Marty Wygod
also was the co-breeder and owner of Distance winner Imagine.
Sierra Sunset was ridden by Russell
Baze and trained by Jeff Bonde. The $40,000 Northern California Yearling
Sale graduate has three wins in seven starts, earnings of $169,696 and was
coming off an eight-length win in the Sept. 15 Bay Meadows Juvenile.
In his first race around two turns,
Sierra Sunset ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.65 and won by 1 ½ lengths at
odds of 6-1. My Redeemer was second and Harlene was third.
