Lava Man Heads Classic Field

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2007) – After a pair of sixth-place finishes, California champion Lava Man is the 7-5 morning-line favorite in Saturday’s $250,000 California Cup Classic, presented by Smith Barney, at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

Lava Man is by Slew City Slew, out of the Nostalgia’s Star mare Li’l Ms. Lenoard, was bred by Lonnie Arterburn and Kim and Eve Kuhlmann, was foaled at Popular Meadows and is owned by STD Racing and Jason Wood. The former $50,000 claim has 17 wins in 42 starts, earnings of $5,214,706 and is coming off a sixth in the Oct. 7 Oak Tree Mile.

Valiant Effort is by Bertrando, out of the Flying Paster mare Blonde Fever, was bred and owned by Marty and Pam Wygod and foaled at River Edge Farm. He has two wins in nine starts, earnings of $94,200 and is coming off a 7 ˝-length allowance win Sept. 30.

Seminole Native is by Lil Tyler, out of the Magic Prospect mare Lake Okeechobee, was bred by and foaled at Madera Thoroughbreds and is owned by E.Z Eight Racing, Henig, Venneri Racing, et al. He has three wins in 14 starts, earnings of $116,180 and is coming off a third in an Oct. 5 allowance.

Bold Chieftain is by Chief Seattle, out of the Seattle Dancer mare Hooked on Music, was bred by owners Langbein, Morey, Robinson, et al and was foaled at Cardiff Stud Farm. He has six wins in 12 starts, earnings of $315,775 and is coming off a fourth in the Sept. 22 Bay Meadows Breeders’ Cup Handicap.

Celtic Dreamin is by Game Plan, out of the On the Sauce mare Astral Dreamer, was bred by Rainbow Meadows, foaled at Fincher Ranch and is owned by K.K. Sengara. The $25,000 Barretts purchase has five wins and a second in six starts, earnings of $269,583 and is coming off a win in the Sept. 23 British Columbia Derby.

Freesgood is by Free House, out of the Housebuster mare Fun Project, was bred by owners Currin & Eisman and was foaled at Blooming Hills. He has two wins in 13 starts, earnings of $193,534 and is coming off a fourth in an Oct. 5 allowance.

A Gallant Discover is by Discover, out of the Desert Wine mare Lonely Dove, was bred by Dinesh Maniar & Getaway Farms, was foaled at Getaway Farms and is owned by Bay Cove Farm. He has four wins in 21 starts, earnings of $176,695 and is coming off a second in an Oct. 13 optional claimer.

Add Heat is by Unusual Heat, out of the Be a Native mare Chemolo, was bred by Madeline Auerbach, foaled at Old English Rancho and is owned by Abrams, Auerbach, Wilson, et al. He has three wins in 24 starts, earnings of $182,890 and is coming off a win in an Oct. 18 optional claimer.

Tiz Afire is by Cee’s Tizzy, out of the Mr. Leader mare Burning Desire, was bred by Harris Farms and Ken Maddy Trust, foaled at Harris Farms and is owned by Harris Farms. He has four wins in 14 starts, earnings of $208,302 and is coming off a third in a Sept. 28 optional claimer.

Rush with Thunder is by Tribal Rule, out of the Bertrando mare Gentle Words, was bred by Marty and Pam Wygod, was foaled at River Edge Farm and is owned by L-Bo Racing. The $18,000 Barretts purchase has six wins in 18 starts, earnings of $225,840 and is coming off a sixth in an Oct. 5 allowance.

Cheroot is by Smokester, out of the Far North mare Triple Connection, was bred by owner Charlotte Wrather and was foaled at Cottonwood Ranch. He has six wins in 25 starts, earnings of $431,801 and is coming off a seventh in an Oct. 5 allowance.
