$175,000 John C. Mabee Cal Cup Mile
EPIC POWER
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2006) –
Claimer Epic Power held off a cavalry charge to post a neck victory in
Saturday’s $175,000 John C. Mabee California Cup Mile at Oak Tree at Santa
Anita.
Epic Power is a 5-year-old gelding
by Epic Honor, out of the Eighty Below Zero mare Petite N Powerful, was
bred by Richard Meister and is owned by La Canada Stables.
He has 10 wins in 42 starts,
earnings of $389,387 and was coming off a nose win in an Oct. 8 $62,500
claimer. He was claimed by his current owners in March for $40,000.
Epic Power was trained by Jack
Carava, ridden by Corey Nakatani and went off at odds of 8-1. He ran the
mile on turf in 1:34.60. Running Free, third in the race last year, was
second. Super Strut, sixth in the race last year, was third and defending
champion Drake’s Victory was fourth.
This was Epic Power’s stakes debut
and snapped a string of 21 consecutive races for a tag. He broke his
maiden for $12,500. He’s won four of seven starts at Santa Anita.
