Classic Looks Wide Open

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 25, 2006) – Millionaire Texcess and morning-line favorite Top This and That lead a field of nine entered in Saturday’s $250,000 California Cup Classic, presented by Smith Barney, the featured race on the $1.325 million card for California-breds at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

Texcess is by In Excess, out of the Regal Classic mare Danish Alamode, was bred by Ron Gomez and is owned by Anastasi or Anastsi or Van Berger. The $85,000 and $300,000 Barretts purchase has three wins in 20 starts, is the highest earner in the field at $1,085,355 and is coming off a second in an Oct. 10 allowance. His last win was 22 months ago

Top This and That is by Old Topper, out of the Theatrical mare Emmy Ann, was bred by Tommy Town Thoroughbreds and is owned by Hayes, Hayes and Higman. He has five wins in 22 starts, earnings of $332,186 and is coming off a second in the Sept. 24 Hinds Invitational. He was second in last year’s Cal Cup Starter Handicap.

Cheroot is by Smokester, out of the Far North mare Triple Connection and was bred by owner Charlotte Wrather. He has five wins in 21 starts, earnings of $321,401 and is coming off a third in an Oct. 1 allowance.

American All Star is by American Day, out of the Kingmambo mare Cover Letter, was bred by John and Betty Mabee and is owned by Oak Valley Stables and Machowsky. He has seven wins in 29 starts, earnings of $239,568 and is coming off a nose win in the Oct. 15 Bull Dog Handicap. He was 11th in last year’s Cal Cup Mile.

King Mobay is by King of the Hunt, out of the Raise a Champion mare Aunt Polly, was bred by Ken Miedema and is owned by Gorman or Empire Stables or Perry. He has five wins in 24 starts, earnings of $137,347 and is coming off a Sept. 24 allowance win and was claimed for $16,000 two starts back.

Robador is by Robannier, out of the Falstaff mare Ivory Bowl and was bred by owner Robert Walter Family Trust. He has three wins in 13 starts, earnings of $317,178 and is coming off a third in a Sept. 17 optional claimer.

McNasty is by Bertrando, out of the Steelinctive mare Tiny Kristin and was bred by Arnold Family Trust. He has two wins in 10 starts, earnings of $98,174 and is coming off a third in a Sept. 30 allowance. This is his stakes debut.

Seven Nation Army is by General Meeting, out of the Woodman mare Swingtime Music, was bred by Betty Mabee and is owned by David Lanzman Racing or Wood. He has two wins in seven starts, earnings of $142,727 and is coming off a sixth in the Sept. 11 Derby Trial. The $15,000 Barretts purchase won the Real Good Deal Stakes.

Iced Out is by Comic Strip, out of the Patton mare Patented, was bred by Dr. and Mrs. William Gray and is owned by Lorraine and Rod Rodriguez. He has three wins in 11 starts, earnings of $123,210 and is coming off a fifth in a Sept. 30 allowance.
