Desert Boom Heads Classic
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2005) –
Desert Boom, the claimer-turned-graded winner, was installed as the
morning-line favorite in a field of eight entered for Sunday’s $250,000
California Cup Classic, presented by Smith Barney, the featured race on
the $1.325 million card for California-breds at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.
Desert Boom is by Boomerang, out of
the Desert Wine mare Sand Dance, was bred by Van Mar Farms and is owned by
Robert Bone. He has 14 wins in 35 starts, earnings of $594,420 and is
coming off a third in the Sept. 24 Hawthorne Gold Cup, having earlier won
the Grade III Berkeley Handicap and the Claiming Crown Jewel.
Devil Badgett is by Bold Badgett,
out of the Prospectors Gamble mare Senorita Diablita, was bred by S L U
Inc. and is owned by La Canada Stables. He has six wins in 33 starts,
earnings of $233,296 and is coming off a fourth when he was claimed for
$50,000 Oct. 1.
McCann’s Mojave is by Memo, out of
the Nordic Prince mare Joni U. Bar and was bred by owners Nikki Hunt and
Mike Willman. He has six wins in 14 starts, earnings of $405,380 and is
coming off a fifth in the Grade I Ancient Title Oct. 8, having won the
Grade II Potrero Grande Handicap last year.
Cheroot is by Smokester, out of the
Far North mare Triple Connection and was bred by owner Charlotte Wrather.
He has three wins in 12 starts, earnings of $95,540 and is coming off a
third in an Oct. 1 allowance.
Deputy Doc Renzi is by Wild Deputy,
out of the Slew the Surgeon mare City Doc, was bred by Bo Kelly and is
owned by Kelly Racing Stables and Martz. He has two wins in six starts,
earnings of $77,140 and is coming off an Oct. 14 optional claiming win.
Texcess is by In Excess, out of the
Regal Classic mare Danish Alamode, was bred by Ron Gomez and is owned by
Aldabbagh or Aguirre. The $85,000 Barretts purchase has three wins in 10
starts, is the highest earner in the field at $784,665 and is coming off a
second in an Oct. 10 allowance. He won last year’s Cal Cup Juvenile.
Mr. Joe C. is by Present Value, out
of the Agitate mare Windy Tate, was bred by Cumbari Stables and is owned
by Cumbari Stables and Mayer. The 7-year-old has three wins in 41 starts,
earnings of $306,924 and is making his first start since a third in an
Aug. 7 optional claimer. He was fifth in this race in 2003 and 12th in the
Cal Cup Juvenile in 2000.
Carano is by In Excess, out of the
Mr. Prospector mare Gilded Dancer and was bred by owners Al and Sandee
Kirkwood. He has three wins in six starts, with earnings of $104,550 and
is coming off consecutive wins. He is the full brother to millionaire
Valentine Dancer.
