Cal Cup Champions Return

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 24, 2005) -- Three of the 2004 California Cup champions, and two others from 2003, could vie for victories when the $1.3 million series for state-breds is conducted for the 16th year at Santa Anita on Nov. 6, closing day of the fall Oak Tree meeting.

Two of the ex-champions could be in the starting gate for the same race -- the $175,000 Cal Cup Mile on turf. A to the Z is being pointed for a defense of his 2004 title and 2003 Mile winner Lennyfromalibu also is a likely starter.

Dream of Summer, who captured the 1 1/16-mile Cal Cup Matron last year, and defeated defending Breeders’ Cup Distaff champion Ashado in Oaklawn Park’s Grade I Apple Blossom Handicap last spring, will seek a repeat in the $150,000 event for older state-bred fillies and mares.

Other former Cal Cup champions expected to contend for 2005 titles are 2004 Juvenile winner Texcess, who will compete in the $250,000, 1 1/8-mile Classic, presented by Smith Barney and 2003 Distance winner Moscow Burning, who is seeking a second score in the $100,000, 1 ¼-mile turf race for older fillies and mares.
