Cal Cup Stable Notes

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 21, 2005) -- In a racing rarity, full brothers Lennyfromalibu and Orbit’s World could meet in the $175,000 California Cup Mile on closing day at Oak Tree, Sunday, Nov. 6.

Lennyfromalibu, who registered a 25-1 upset in the 2003 Cal Cup Mile, is "50-50" to make this year's grass race, trainer Barry Abrams said. Orbit's World, a 3-year-old bay colt that was sixth in the Oak Tree Derby on Oct. 15, also is possible for the race. Each horse is by Unusual Heat out of Style of the Year and owned by Madeline Auerbach.

A 6-year-old chestnut gelding, Lennyfromalibu was sidelined for almost a year with arthritis before returning to the track.

"We'll see how things develop," Abrams said. "Lenny will be close to the front; Orbit comes from behind but a lot would depend on the draw."

Lennyfromalibu worked six furlongs Friday on Santa Anita's fast main track in 1:13.80.

Meanwhile, Abrams says the prolific Unusual Heat "is doing great. He's got a full book already for next year at $12,500 at Old English Rancho. He covered 85 mares last year and he's booked for 85 more next season."

Abrams offered Unusual Heat's breeding services free the first three years, then thanks to supply and demand, an initial fee of $2,500 was established. It has since increased from $3,000 to $6,000 to the current $12,500.

"We're already booking for 2007," Abrams said.
