Cal Cup Stable Notes

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 15, 2005) – Hollywood Gold Cup winner Lava Man bled in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and is being pointed to the $250,000 California Cup Classic presented by Smith Barney, said Dennis O'Neill, brother of trainer Doug O'Neill.

Lennyfromalibu, who registered a 25-1 upset in the 2003 Cal Cup Mile, worked five furlongs on the main track in :59.40 Friday. Sidelined with arthritis for nearly a year before returning to the track, Lennyfromalibu "has a longshot chance" to make this year's grass race on Nov. 6, trainer Barry Abrams said.

Uncle Denny, fourth, beaten 10 1/2 lengths in a field of five as the 13-10 favorite in Wednesday's seventh race, is a candidate for the Cal Cup Classic.

"He went too fast first time back," trainer Rafael Becerra said of the 3-year-old son of In Excess who was making his first start since March 12. "We'll be all right. I want to see how he is in a few days and I'll talk to the boss (owner Stan Fulton) but I think we'll go for the Classic."
