ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2004) –
Favored Ring of Friendship led virtually every step of the way and won
Saturday’s $50,000 XTRA Sports 690/1150 California Cup Starter Handicap at Oak
Tree at Santa Anita.
Ring of Friendship is by General
Meeting, out of the Seeking the Gold mare Thee and Me, was bred by John and
Betty Mabee and is owned by Nico Nierenberg, who claimed the 4-year-old gelding
out of his debut last year.
This was his third win in 11 starts
and raised his earnings to $76,642. Noble Kinsman, winner of the race in 2002,
was second with Gobi Dan finishing third. The 2-1 favorite ran the 1 ½ miles on
turf in 2:26.61, the second-fastest running of the race
Ring of Friendship was trained by
Patrick Gallagher and ridden by Gary Stevens.
