Cal Cup Matron Could
Make the Grade
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2004) –
Saturday’s $150,000 TOC/CTT California Cup Matron has the quality of a graded
stakes with the entries of Dream of Summer, Summer Wind Dancer Yearly Report and
defending champion Royally Chosen.
Dream of Summer is by Siberian Summer,
out of the Skywalker mare Mary’s Dream and was bred by owner James Weigel. She
brings a five race win streak into the Matron, including the Grade II A Gleam
and the Grade III Rancho Bernardo Handicap. She has six wins in eight starts and
$322,500 in earnings.
Summer Wind Dancer is by Siberian
Summer, out of the Incinderator mare Native Wind Dancer, was bred by Richard and
Yvette Wira, Linda Vetter and Deborah Penny and is owned by Vetter, Wira and
Wira. She is coming off wins in the Grade II Delaware Handicap and Grade III
Hawthorne Handicap and won the Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies. She has five wins in
16b starts and $865,762 in earnings.
Yearly Report is by General Meeting,
out of the Half a Year mare Fiscal year, was bred by John and Betty Mabee and is
owned by Golden Eagle Farm. The 3-year-old filly has five wins in seven starts
and $715,900 in earnings. The has three Grade II wins – the Santa Ynez, Black
Eyed Susan and Del mar Oaks and most recently was fourth in the Aug. 21 Grade I
Alabama.
Royally Chosen is by In Excess, out of
the King of Kings mare Her Royalty, was bred by Old English Rancho and Headley
and is owned by Abruzzo, Johnston, Zehenni, et al. She won this race by 3 ˝
lengths last year, one of five wins in 19 starts with earnings of $483,638. Most
recently she was third in the Aug. 8 Clement L. Hirsch Handicap.
Bartok’s Blithe is by Bartok, out of
the Roanoke mare Merry Krisoke, was bred by Morry Cohen and is owned by 5C
Racing Stable. She has three wins in 21 starts and $360,976 in earnings. She was
third in this race last year.
Bit of Folly is by Olympio, out of the
Leo Castelli mare Leo’s Lass, was bred by John Zamora and is owned by Esaul
Duran. She has two wins, $40,880 in earnings and most recently was fourth in an
Oct. 1 allowance.
