Tizbud Leads Deep Cal
Cup Classic Field
ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 13, 2004) –
Saturday’s $250,000 California Cup Classic drew a deep field of 10 that includes
two previous winners – Tizbud and Calkins Road – as well as graded winner
Yougottawanna and multiple stakes winner Excess Summer.
Tizbud won the race last year and
hasn’t run since, plagued by shin problems. He is a full brother to horse of the
year Tiznow by Cee’s Tizzy, out of the Seattle Song mare Cee’s Song, was bred by
Cecilia Straub Rubens and is owned by Cees Stable. Tizbud has two wins in six
starts and earnings of $219,266.
Intuit is by Truckee, out of the
Ferdinand mare Countess Ferdinand, and was bred by owner Four Quarters Corp. He
has three wins, $147,330 in earnings and is looking for his first stakes
victory.
Excess Summer is by In Excess, out of
the Bold Ruckus mare Summer Ruckus, was bred by Eddie Gregson and E.J. Hand and
is owned by Conboy, McClanahan and Wine. The $3,500 Barretts purchase has six
wins in 12 starts and $501,461 in earnings. He is coming off a third in the
Sept. 15 Governor’s Cup Handicap and has wins in four stakes, most recently last
year’s On Trust Handicap.
Yougottawanna is by Candi’s Gold, out
of the Midway Circle mare Chapel’s Sister, was bred by Halo Farms and is owned
by Peter Redekop. He is coming off a win in the Aug. 28 Governor’s Handicap and
has eight wins in 28 starts and $525,224 in earnings. Among his wins are the
Grade III Seabiscuit Breeders’ Cup Handicap and the California Cup Juvenile.
Calkins Road won this race in 2002. He
is by Illinois Storm, out of the Lost Code mare Little Code and was bred by
owners Thomas and Deborah Shapiro. He has five wins in 16 starts and earnings of
$488,265 and is coming off a win in the Aug. 7 J.T. Grace Handicap.
Lava Man is by Slew City Slew, out of
the Nostalgia’s Star mare Li’l Ms. Leonard, was bred by Arterburn, Kuhlmann and
Kuhlmann and is owned by STD Racing Stable and Jason Wood. Claimed for $50,000
in August, he won the Derby Trial at Fairplex Park and was third in the Sept. 25
Pomona Derby. He has four wins and $143,603 in earnings.
Kedington was second in this race last
year. He is by Seattle Proud, out of the Smokester mare Helen’s Hope, was bred
by John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery and is owned by Kassie Van Doren. He has
seven wins and $263,152 in earnings and is coming off a third in an Oct. 2
allowance.
Cozy Guy is by Alphabet Soup, out of
the Rambo Dancer mare Lambent, was bred by John Zamora and is owned by Hayes and
Higman. He was second in the Pomona Derby and has four wins in 13 starts and
$152,820 in earnings.
Commander’s Flag is by Spinning World,
out of the Mr. Prospector mare Gay Chiffon, was bred by John and Betty Mabee and
is owned by Golden Eagle Farm. He was third in this race last year, is coming
off a win in an Aug. 18 optional claimer and has four wins and $228,694 in
earnings.
Anziyan Royalty is by Anziyan, out of
the Tank’s Prospect mare Shy Solana and was bred by owner Nick Cafarchia. He has
five wins in 12 starts and $151,440 in earnings. Most recently he was second in
the Phil D. Shepherd handicap Sept. 11.
