Cal-bred Champions Announced ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 22, 2007) – The California-bred horse of the year for 2006 will be announced at the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association’s annual meeting and awards dinner, to be held Feb. 5 at the Ritz-Carlton Huntington in Pasadena. Finalists for horse of the year are multiple Grade I winners Brother Derek, Lava Man and Thor’s Echo. The business session begins at 5 p.m. with a 6 p.m. reception and a 7 p.m. awards banquet. Champion sire of California-conceived foals by number of winners – “Bertrando,” owned by Bertrando Syndicate. Champion freshman sire of California-conceived foals by earnings – “Tribal Rule,” owned by Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Wygod. Champion breeders of California-foaled thoroughbreds by earnings – Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Wygod. Outstanding trainer award – Doug O’Neill. Champion California-bred horse of the year – TBA at awards banquet. Champion California-bred Two-Year-Old male – “Pirates Deputy,” bred by Martin J. Wygod & John Spohler, owned by Lanni Family Trust & Bernie Schiappa, trained by Bob Baffert. Champion California-bred Two-Year-Old Female – “Romance is Diane,” bred by Swan Equine Service Co., owned by Senji Nishimura, trained by Mike Mitchell. Champion California-bred Three-Year-Old male – “Brother Derek,’ bred by Mary Caldwell, owned by Cecil Peacock, trained by Dan Hendricks. Champion California-bred Three-Year-Old Female – “Bai and Bai,” bred by Mares’ Nest, owned by George V. Vinson & Harry Wilson, trained by William Delia. Also at the banquet, the late breeder John Mabee and his wife Betty Mabee, their legendary gelding Best Pal, the late breeder and Legislator Ken Maddy and Free House will be inducted into the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Hall of Fame.
