Excess Summer a Rich Runner-up

ARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2004) -- Excess Summer, a $3,500 Barretts purchase and $40,000 claim last year, collected more money for losing Saturday than he's ever earned from winning.

The son of In Excess finished second behind Southern Image in the $1 million CTBA/Barretts Classic at Santa Anita, the feature event in the $3.6 million Sunshine Millions II. The $200,000 payday is the biggest of Excess Summer's 11-race career and jumped his earnings to $494,261.

Excess Summer finished three lengths behind Southern Image and five lengths in front of The Judge Sez Who.

Excess Summer is out of the Bold Ruckus mare Summer Ruckus and was bred by Eddie Gregson and E.J. Hand. Claimed out of his debut win for $40,000 last April, he had six overall wins and four stakes wins in 2003, including the On Trust Handicap Dec. 13. The $3,500 Barretts purchase has six wins in 11 starts.
