ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 8, 2003) --
Longshot Lennyfromalibu led wire-to-wire to capture Saturday's $175,000
California Cup John C. Mabee Mile at Oak Tree at Santa Anita by two
lengths as runner-up Continental Red became the latest California-bred
millioniare.
Lennyfromalibu is a 4-year-old
gelding by Unusual Heat, out of the Half a Year mare Style of the Year,
and was bred by J. and M. Auerbach. Sent off at odds of 25-1, he ran the
mile on turf in 1:34.85 and won by two lengths.
Lennyfromalibu is owned by breeder
Madeline Auerbach, trained by Barry Abrams and was ridden by Ryan
Fogelsonger, who won the Cal Cup Distance earlier in the day aboard Moscow
Burning.
It was Lennyfromalibu's first win
in 13 months and third win in 13 career starts, raising his earnings to
$220,026. He was 10th in the race a year ago.
Speaking of career earnings,
Continental Red's $35,000 paycheck for second raised his total to
$1,017,558, making him the 35th Cal-bred millionaire. He finished second
in the Cal Cup Classic last year.
Del Mar Yearling Sale graduate
