Shalini Tries the Distance Again

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2003) -- Shalini, loser by a nose in the race last year, will try the $100,000 TVG California Cup Distance Handicap again Saturday in the third race on the $1.325 million card at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

The daughter of Urgent Request is out of the Falstaff mare Code It Nikki and was bred by Briere Thoroughbreds. She has wins in the Pro or Con, Fran's Valentine and Valkyr Handicaps, but has not run since the Valkyr win July 19. She will be spotting her 11 rivals anywhere from four to 11 pounds in the 1 1/4 mile turf race for fillies and mares. She lost the race a year ago in a head-bob to Nicole's Pursuit.

Flying Heart was a $47,000 Del Mar Yearling Sale purchase. She is by Wekiva Springs, out of the Snow Chief mare Booklore, and was bred by The Hat Ranch West and Bergner Mullens. She is coming off a fourth in an Oct. 9 allowance race.

New Water is by Lake George, out of the Batonnier mare Nu Liz, and was bred by Harris Farms. She broke her maiden in her third race and is coming off a fourth in an Oct. 8 allowance race.

Sweet Frippery was fifth in the race a year ago at 54-1. She is by Moscow Ballet, out of the Alysheba mare Alygria, and was bred by Kenneth Smole and Jane Conway. She adds blinkers and is coming off a second in an Oct. 24 allowance.

Continental Lu is by Flying Continental, out of the Proper Reality mare Proper Upbringing, and was bred by John H. Deeter. She has $206,326 in career earnings, but her last win was in January, 2001.

Amber Hills was 10th in the Juvenile Fillies last year at 4-1. She is by Bold Badgett, out of the Lord Avie mare Princess of Honey, and was bred by S L U Inc. She has wins in the California and Bay Meadows Oaks and the CTBA Marian Stakes, along with $230,230 in earnings.

Ste. Pecheresse was ninth in the race a year ago at 33-1. She is by Lake George, out of the Halo mare Halo At Dawn, and was bred by Robert H. Walter Family Trust. She is coming off a win in an Oct. 12 optional claimer.

Ardum Relaunch is by Cee's Tizzy, out of the Al Mamoon mare Mamoon's Slew, and was bred by Bill Mudra. She has $108,594 in earnings and is looking for her first stakes win.

Valentine Dancer is by In Excess, out of the Mr. Prospector mare Gilded Dancer, and was bred by Al and Sandee Kirkwood. She is coming off her biggest win in the Harold C. Ramser Sr. Handicap Oct. 12 and has $242,126 in earnings.

Natural Treasure is by Walter Willy, out of the Trempolino mare Treasure, and was bred by Ron Gomez. The $7,500 Barretts purchase has been claimed five times this year, from $8,000 to $50,000 in her most recent race, a Sept. 3 win. She has five wins in 11 starts and $101,008 in earnings.

Moscow Burning is by Moscow Ballet, out of the Mr. Leader mare Burning Desire, and was bred by Harris Farms and Ken Maddy Trust. She has five wins in seven starts and was claimed for $25,000 four races back. She is coming off consecutive allowance wins.

Susie Joe's was a $47,000 purchase at the Del Mar Yearling Sale. She is by Bertrando, out of the Cozzene mare Fleet Cozzene, and was bred by Ed Nahem. Claimed for $32,000 out of her second start, she has three wins and is coming off a fourth in an Oct. 4 optional claimer.
