Sister Act in Distaff

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2003) -- Roberta's Mango will have to beat her sister Bold Roberta and Del Mar Yearling Sales graduate Centerofattention, among others, to win Saturday's $150,000 John Deere California Cup Distaff for fillies and mares at about 6 1/2 furlongs on the Santa Anita hillside turf course.

Roberta's Mango is by Bold Badgett, out of the Prospector's Gamble mare Roberta Ullmann, and was bred by S L U Inc. She has won twice on this course and has $247,645 in earnings.

Aclevershadeofjade is a $12,000 Barretts purchase. She is by Clever Trick, out of the Jade Hunter mare Ashadeofjade, and was bred by Bacardi Bloodstock. She lost a $50,000 claiming race Oct. 19 by a head.

Sweetcakesanshakes is an 8-year-old daughter of Something Lucky, out of the Kennedy Road mare Tami U Bar, and was bred by Old English Rancho and Willman. She has hit the board three times in five races this year after a three-year layoff and has two wins and two seconds in five tries on this course. She has $262,780 in earnings.

Real Paranoide was sixth in the race a year ago at 16-1. She is by Paranoide, out of the Hoist the Silver mare Nan's Ace, and was bred by Harris Farms and J. Garvan Kelly. A $5,200 Barretts purchase, she was claimed from her last start for $40,000 and has nine career wins and earnings of $312,222.

Icantgoforthat is by In Excess, out of the Copelan mare Texinadress, and was bred by Michael Pegram. She won the Survive Stakes in January and was second to Heat Haze in the Grade III Las Cienegas. She has $318,388 in earnings.

Bold Roberta is by Bold Badgett, out of the Prospector's Gamble mare Roberta Ullmann, and was bred by S L U Inc. She is coming off consecutive wins in the Pio Pico and Las Madrinas Handicaps and has earnings of $326,482.

Oneexcessivenite is by In Excess, out of the Son of Briartic mare Favored One, and was bred by Michael Pegram. She was claimed twice this year, for $50,000 and $62,500, and is coming off a win in a $50,000 claimer Oct. 13. She has $142,936 in earnings.

Blind Ambition is by Political Ambition, out of the Relaunch mare Reclass, and was bred by Harris Farms. Second to Shalini in the Fran's Valentine, she has been off since winning a July 3 allowance.

Princess V. is by Memo, out of the Fort Calgary mare Fort Silver, and was bred by owner Ken Porter. She is multiple graded-stakes placed, but has not run since finishing sixth in the July 27 Fleet Treat Stakes.

Grant Marty a Wish was last in the race a year ago at 27-1. She is by Beautiful Crown, out of the Pirate's Bounty mare Grant Maker, and was bred by Martin Bach. Claimed out of her winning debut for $12,500, she has six wins in 12 starts and $194,681 in earnings, but is looking for her first stakes win.

Fresal is by Atticus, out of the Cozzene mare La Fresa, and was bred by owner Granja Vista del Rio Stable. She broke her maiden in her fourth start and was thirde in an Oct. 25 allowance.

Tucked Away is by Unusual Heat, out of the Be a Native mare Chermolo, and was bred by Madeline Auerbach. Claimed for $40,000 last December, she has won three of her last five races -- including the Fleet Treat Stakes -- and $179,774 in career earnings.

Centerofattention was a $55,000 purchase at the Del Mar Yearling Sale. She is by Beau Genius, out of the Spend a Buck mare Crowning Faith, and was bred by Ross Harris. She has three stakes wins in her last four starts, most recently the Sept. 1 Solana Beach Handicap.

A Smile Per Mile is by Magical Mile, out of the Silverville mare Sorry I Asked, and was bred by Diamond 2 Land and Cattle Co. She has eight wins in 32 starts, most recently a $62,500 claiming race on this course Oct. 11.
