A Millionaire's Mile
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2003) --
Continental Red takes another shot at the million-dollar mark Saturday
when he heads a contentious lineup that includes two-time winner Native
Desert in the $175,000 John C. Mabee California Cup Mile Handicap at Oak
Tree at Santa Anita.
Continental Red, a California
champion, was second in the Cal Cup Classic last year at 9-2. He is by
Flying Continental, out of the Glaros mare Sharp Looking Lady, and was
bred by Mr. and Mrs. Wes Fitzpatrick. He most recently was fourth in the
Carleton F. Burke Handicap Oct. 24. His career earnings are $982,558.
Lennyfromalibu was 10th in the race
last year at 23-1. He is by Unusual Heat, out of the Half a Year mare
Style of the Year, and was bred by J & M Auerbach. His last win was prior
to last year's Cal Cup.
Lily's Lad was fourth in the 2001
Cal Cup Mile. The $250,000 Barretts purchase is winless since 2001 but
dead-heated with Shalini for second behind Continental Red in the Quicken
Tree Handicap. He is by Bertrando, out of the Lyphard mare Pharapache, and
was bred by Marshall Naify.
Spinelessjellyfish was second in
the race last year as the lukewarm 7-2 favorite. He has $853,783 in career
earnings on 10 wins in 40 starts. He was a $130,000 purchase at Barretts
in a dispersal last year. He is by Skywalker, out of the Desert Wine mare
Silky Sand Sammy, and was bred by Cardiff Farm Management.
Sea to See was fourth in the race
last year at 18-1. An $82,000 Barretts 2002 dispersal purchase and a
$62,500 claim in February, he is by Al Mamoon, out of the Desert Wine mare
Sea Caylee Run, and was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Barton Heller. His last win
was the Apr. 26 Khaled Stakes and his career earnings are $378,519.
Bourbon County is by Smokester, out
of the Turkoman mare Turkish Gipsy, and was bred by Bobby Ng & Cardiff
Farm Management, making him a half-brother to last year's Mile winner
Turkish Prize. He has $114,990 in earnings and is looking for his first
stakes win.
Good Meeting is by General Meeting,
out of the Captain Nick mare Nick's Goddess, and was bred by Thomas and
Marguerite Cavanagh Family Trust. A $60,000 Barretts purchase, he was
claimed for $50,000 Aug. 30 and was second in an Oct. 18 optional claimer.
He has $236,173 in earnings.
Sharp Boi is by Sharp Victor, out
of the Boitron mare Agirlfromars, and was bred by Marciana Associates. He
is looking for his first stakes win and has $179,403 in earnings.
Native Desert is a 10-year-old by
Desert Classic, out of the Princely Native mare Miss C. Native, and was
bred by Fred Watarida. He has 21 career wins (including this race in 1999
and 2001) and more than $1.8 million in earnings.
Menacing Dennis is a Del Mar
Yearling Sale graduate who sold at Barretts for $100,000. He is by Star de
Naskra, out of the Prince Sabo mare Joli's Princess, and was bred by K C
Horse Corp. He has $244,990 in earnings on four wins, and most recently
was second in an Oct. 3 allowance.
Blairs General sold for $25,000 at
the Del Mar Yearling Sale. He is by General Meeting, out of the Half a
Year mare Crown of Jewels, and was bred by Mr. and Mrs. Dick Probert and
Robert Cowley. He broke his maiden Oct. 16 in his eighth start.
Jack's Silver is by Soft Gold, out
of the Runaway Groom mare Little Ricky S., and was bred by Southern Nevada
Racing Stables. He is looking for his first stakes win and is coming off a
seventh in a Sept. 1 optional claimer.
