Solid Second Session Closes Del Mar
Sale
DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 11, 2003) --
The Annual CTBA Sales Del Mar Yearling Sale concluded Monday night with
four six-figure sales, topped by a Smokester colt that sold for $160,000.
The sales topper, out of the Prized
mare Prizes Are Lovely, was consigned by Green Acres Stable Inc. (Jack and
Barb Hatch), Agent, and purchased by Dave Hulkewicz/Mercedes Stables LLC
of Plano, Tex.
A colt by Event of the Year, out of
the stakes-placed Soviet Star mare Star of the River, sold for $130,000 to
Ed and Natalie Friendly Trust and was consigned by Golden Eagle Farm,
Agent.
Two fillies sold for $100,000 each.
One was by Lemon Drop Kid, out of the Bertrando mare Rattle My Nerves. She
was consigned by Mary Knight, Agent, and purchased by Tom Bunn. The other
was by Bertrando, out of the Skip Trial mare When. She was consigned by
River Edge Farm, Agent, and purchased by Jay Em Ess Stable. She is a
full-sister to Del Mar Yearling Sales topper Leanessa, a winner of
$165,022.
Other significant sales Monday
night included a colt by Bertrando, out of the stakes-winning Private
Account mare Personal Victory, who was consigned by Sam Hendricks, Agent,
and sold for $80,000 to NW Management/Fleetwood. The colt is a full
brother to the multiple stakes-winning California-bred Hugh Hefner and the
stakes-placed Speedy Pick.
And a General Meeting filly, out of
the Afleet mare Our Golden Promise, was purchased for $75,000. She was
consigned by Bruno DeBerdt, Agent, and was purchased by Kristen A. Mulhall,
Agent.
Sunday's opening session was topped by an In Excess colt selling for
$140,000. He is out of the His Majesty mare Gift to the World and was
consigned by Mary Knight, Agent. The ticket was signed by NW
Management/Fleetwood.
The second-high sale of the session
was a California-bred colt by Slew City Slew, out of the producing
Superbity mare Here's Lookn Adder, selling for $65,000 to Dan Morgan,
Agent for Super-Horse Inc. The colt is a half-brother to five stakes
winners, including Takin It Deep and Just Lookn, and was consigned by Mary
Knight, Agent.
Next was a Washington-bred colt by Southern Halo, out of the
stakes-winning Last Tycoon mare Almost Skint, selling for $55,000 to Jerry
Dutton, Agent. The colt was consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency.
During the Sunday session, 36 head
sold for a gross of $1,133,000, an average of $31,472 and a median of
$30,000. There were 28 buybacks and 16 outs. Last year's first-night
average was a record $47,676 with a median price of $40,000 for the 51
head sold.
Monday's second session saw 53 head sold for a gross of $1,952,500, an
average of $36,840 and a median of $25,000 with 23 buybacks and three
outs. The average was an increase of more than 18 percent from the first
session of the sale. The session surpassed last year's second session for
sales-topper (by $10,000) and six-figure sales (four to three).
For the combined two sessions, 90
head sold for a gross of $3,105,500, an average of $34,506 and median of
$25,500, with 50 buybacks and 19 outs.
In last year's sale, 98 head sold
for a gross of $4,289,500, an average of $43,770 and a median of $32,000.
