In Excess Colt Tops Del Mar Yearling Sale

DEL MAR, Calif. (Aug. 10, 2003) -- An In Excess colt selling for $140,000 topped Sunday night's opening session of the 2003 CTBA Sales Del Mar Yearling Sale at the Del Mar HorsePark.

The second and final session, featuring 76 yearlings, will be held Monday at 7 p.m.

The session-topping colt, a Jan. 19 foal, is a California-bred out of the His Majesty mare Gift to the World, was consigned by Mary Knight, Agent, and was bred by William Siemon. The ticket was signed by NW Management/Fleetwood.

The second-high sale of the session was a California-bred colt by Slew City Slew, out of the producing Superbity mare Here's Lookn Adder, selling for $65,000 to Dan Morgan, Agent for Super-Horse Inc. The colt is a half-brother to five stakes winners, including Takin It Deep and Just Lookn, and was consigned by Mary Knight, Agent.

Next was a Washington-bred colt by Southern Halo, out of the stakes-winning Last Tycoon mare Almost Skint, selling for $55,000 to Jerry Dutton, Agent. The colt was consigned by Havens Bloodstock Agency.

During the Sunday session, 36 head sold for a gross of $1,133,000, an average of $31,472 and a median of $30,000. There were 28 buybacks and 16 outs. Last year's first-night average was a record $47,676 with a median price of $40,000 for the 51 head sold.
