$70,000 Rancho San Miguel Stakes
EL NUKI
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Apr. 26, 2003)
-- El Nuki took over at the top of the stretch and drew off to a
four-length win in Saturday's $70,000 Rancho San Miguel Stakes on the Gold
Rush Day card at Hollywood Park.
El Nuki is by Nucay, out of the
Mining mare Colba, and was bred by Dr. Carlos Vega. The 4-year-old gelding
is owned by David and Holly Wilson, trained by Vladimir Cerin and ridden
by Pat Valenzuela. He ran the seven furlongs in 1:21.19 and went off at
odds of 10-1. He had run his previous six races on the turf.
The win was the third in 13 career
starts for El Nuki, whose earnings climbed to $127,960. He was claimed out
of his maiden win for $40,000 Oct. 11, 2001 and was winning for the first
time in a year after four consecutive second-place finishes.
Summer Service, the 1-2 favorite,
finished second and Purple Cop was third.
