Khaled Not Big Enough for Siblings

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Apr. 25, 2003) – What are the odds that half-brothers not only would run on the same California Gold Rush card, but in the same race?

Turkish Gipsy ought to be one proud broodmare. Of the nine horses entered in Saturday’s $150,000 TVG Khaled Stakes, two are her sons.

Bourbon County is a 4-year-old colt by Smokester. Turkish Prize is an 8-year-old gelding by Prized.

Bourbon County, in his stakes debut, will be making his 13th start, looking for his fourth win to add to $102,002 in earnings. He broke his maiden for a $30,000 tag in July and has won two of his last three starts, both at the about 6 ˝ furlong distance of Santa Anita’s hillside turf course. He was a $67,000 Keeneland yearling purchase.

Turkish Prize is a warhorse. This will be his 44th start and he is looking for his 12th win and to add to $610,055 in earnings. He has been claimed six times in the last 13 months, including by current trainer Eddie Truman out of his last race for $50,000. Turkish Prize’s biggest win came in last November’s California Cup Mile, but he also won the Sensational Star Handicap as a 4-year-old and finished second in last year’s 1 ˝ mile Quicken Tree Stakes on the Gold Rush Card. He was a $50,000 Keeneland yearling purchase.

Turkish Prize was bred by Bobby Ng, while Bourbon County was bred by Ng and Cardiff Farm Management. Turkish Gipsy also produced the stakes-placed Walk That Walk, who banked $259,250. On the track, Turkish Gipsy was winless in four starts, but is a half-sister to four stakes winners.
