INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Apr. 28, 2002) -- Calkins Road ran down Menacing Dennis in the last few jumps to capture the $250,000 Cal Fed Snow Chief Stakes for 3-year-olds Sunday in the main event of Gold Rush III at Hollywood Park.

Calkins Road is a son of Illinois Storm, out of the Lost Code mare Little Code, and was bred by owners Thomas and Deborah Shapiro. He broke his maiden in his third race Feb. 7 and was coming off a second-place finish to Gobi Dan in a Mar. 28 allowance race. Gobi Dan finished off the board in the Snow Chief.

The $150,000 first-place check is almost triple Calkins' Road career earnings going into the race. He is trained by John Shirreffs and was ridden by Laffit Pincay Jr.

Downtownwillybrown burst out of the starting gate for the early lead in the 1 1/8 mile race. At the top of the stretch, Menacing Dennis took the lead and drew out by three lengths. It took Calkins Road nearly the entire stretch to catch Menacing Dennis just before the wire, with Highly Suspect finishing third.
