$50,000 Kenneth M. Schiffer Cal Cup Starter Sprint GIOVANNETTI
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2002) -- Giovannetti, claimed two races back for $20,000, ran off to a 2 3/4-length win in the $50,000 Kenneth M. Schiffer California Cup Starter Sprint Saturday at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.
Giovannett is a 3-year-old gelded son of Memo, out of the Tsunami Slew mare Rio Tejo, was bred by Rick and Michael Arthur and foaled at Ridgeley Farm. He is a half-brother to Rio Oro, who won the Starter Sprint last year and was entered to run later in the day in the Donald Valpredo
Cal Cup Sprint.
A $53,000 purchase at the 2000 Del Mar Yearling Sale, Gkiovannetti was claimed by trainer Frank Monteleone Sept. 1 out of a $20,000 race at Bay Meadows and returned Oct. 9 to win a Cal-bred allowance race.
Going off at odds of 8-1, Giovannetti ran the six furlongs Saturday in a quick 1:08.85 for his fourth win in six starts, bringing his earnings to $81,796.
Affairintheforest was second and Coconut Mango was third. Stoney, the 1-2 favorite after four consecutive wins, was pulled up on the backstretch and suffered a fatal injury.
