$150,000 Donald Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint UNLIMITED VALUE
ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2002) -- Unlimited Value gave co-breeder Harris Farms its second win on the California Cup card Saturda, taking the $150,000 Donald Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint in a race marred when two horses fell on the far turn.
Unlimited Value is a 6-year-old gelding by Present Value, out of the Don B. mare Donna Duck, and was bred by owner Harris Farms and Ray Johnson and foaled at Harris Farms.
The 3 1/4-length win was Unlimited Value's seventh in 13 races, raising his career earnings to $395,980.He went off at odds of 6-1 and ran the six furlongs in 1:08.35.
Pat Valenzuela scored his third win on the card and trainer Carla Gaines got her second win of the day to go with Super High's Matron win.
"He's been training very well," said Gaines. "When we ran him up north (Oct. 5), he bled. We were hoping we would keep that under control for this race, which we did. Hopefully he didn't bleed in this race."
Treasured Note was second in the Sprint and Con Quixote was third.
In the spill, second choice Rio Oro broke down while dueling with Unlimited Value along the rail midway around the turn. McCordnskuba couldn't avoid the fallen horse and fell sideways. Kent Desormeaux, Rio Oro's rider, was uninjured but Isaias Enriquez, McCordnskuba's jockey, took off
his remaining mount because of body soreness.
Rio Oro, winner of last year's Cal Cup Starter Sprint Handicap, suffered fatal injuries. McCordnskuba walked back to be unsaddled and had several leg cuts.
