$150,000 TOC/CTT Cal Cup Matron Handicap
SUPER HIGH

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2002) -- Super High returned to the main track in impressive fashion Saturday with a 2 1/2-length victory in the $150,000 TOC/CTT California Cup Matron at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.

The 3-year-old daughter of High Brite, out California's broodmare of the year Image of Super, was bred by and foaled at owner Harris Farms, who also bred and owned Teresa Mc, the first Cal Cup Matron winner in 1991.

The win was her fifth in the last seven races, bringing her career record to six wins in 12 starts for earnings of $456,348. It was her fourth stakes win, having earlier won the California Sire Stakes, Flawlessly Stakes and Solana Beach Handicap.

"She dominated these fillies," said jockey Pat Valenzuela. "When they came to me at the three-eighths pole, she picked it up really nice."

Super High's previous three wins were on the turf, but her connections moved her to the dirt in preparation for the $750,000 Sunshine Millions dirt race for fillies and mares in late January. Super High is 3-for-7 on the dirt. She took the lead out of the gate, repelled the bid of 15-1 shot Broke the Slump on the far turn and kicked clear.

Broke the Slump was second, with second choice Elaine's Angel third. Super High, trained by Carla Gaines, was the 3-2 favorite and she ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.64.

Cee's Elegance, ridden by comebacking Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone, grabbed a quarter several steps out of the gate and stumbled badly, finishing fourth in the field of seven.
