Cal Cup is a Family Tradition

ARCADIA, Calif. (Oct. 31, 2002) -- California Cup winners will be determined Saturday, but there are five broodmares who already deserve special recognition for producing two entrants each.

Admiral Minnie, Code It Nikki, Forest Haven, Lady Snerd and Rio Tejo are the proud mamas.

The broodmare with the longest resume is the Tsunami Slew mare Rio Tejo, who will be represented by Giovanetti in the Kenneth M. Schiffer Starter Sprint and Rio Oro in the $150,000 Donald Valpredo Cal Cup Sprint. Rick and Michael Arthur are the breeders. Giovanetti, by Memo, was a $53,000 purchase at the 2000 Del Mar Yearling Sale and was claimed for $20,000 two races back. Rio Oro is a multiple stakes winner by Oraibi who won last year's Cal Cup Starter Sprint. They have a stakes-winning full brother, Guillermo; a winning full sister, Miss Santa Ana, that was nominated to the Cal Cup Distaff; and a half-sister by Bertrando who sold at the Del Mar Yearling Sale for $200,000.

The Golden Eagle II mare Admiral Minnie will be represented by Adminniestrator in the $175,000 John C. Mabee Cal Cup Mile and Cosummateconsumer in the $150,000 TOC/CTT Cal Cup Matron. Adminniestrator is by Incinderator and he won this year's Quicken Tree Stakes. Cosummateconsumer is by Smokester. Both were bred by Fred Sahadi.

The Falstaff mare Code It Nikki will be represented by Broke The Slump in the Matron and Shalini in the $100,000 TVG Cal Cup Distance, both bred by James Briere and the dam's only two foals to race. Broke The Slump, by Slewpy, finished fourth in last year's Cal Cup Distaff Starter. Shalini is by Urgent Request and finished fifth in last year's Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies.

The stakes-winning Pirate's Bounty mare Forest Haven will be represented by Affairintheforest in the $50,000 Cal Cup Starter Sprint and Nicole's Pursuit in the Distance. Allan Fainbarg and Arnold Feuerstein bred the pair, with Affairintheforest by Black Tie Affair and Nicole's Pursuit by Flying Continental.

The Chief's Crown mare Lady Snerd will be represented by Noble Kinsman in the Ridder-Rowan Cal Cup Starter and his full sister Miss Nicolie in the $125,000 XTRA 690/FOX 1150 Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies. Both are by Walter Willy and were bred by Ron Gomez, who also bred their stakes-winning half-brother, Gomezmerize, by Cutlass Reality.
