Earl of Danby Wins Cal Breeders' Championship

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 28, 2001) - Earl of Danby, favored off a winning debut, made the jump from maiden to stakes look easy by winning the $150,000 California Breeders Championship for 2-year-olds at Santa Anita Friday.

The son of Smokester, out of the Red Ryder mare Red Radiance, was bred by owners John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery. He won his maiden debut Dec. 8.

Gobi Dan, a son of Huckster, out of the Silent Fox mare Jellicent and bred by Carl and Olivia Cannata closed strong to finish second. Joey Franco, a son of Avenue of Flags, out of the Native Prospector mare Susan Powter and bred by Jerry Frankel, was third in his debut.
