Son of Helmsman Wins Sovereign Award TORONTO, Ontario (Dec. 16, 2001) - Rare Friends, a son of California stallion Helmsman, was named the Sovereign Award winner as the top 2-year-old male in Canada, outfinishing Changeintheweather and Streakin Rob. In balloting conducted by the Jockey Club of Canada, Rare Friends was honored after winning the Vandal, Swynford and Simcoe Stakes, for earnings of $247,365.
