Horseman Doug Atkins Passes Away at 76

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (Dec. 7, 2001) - A memorial service is scheduled Saturday for longtime horseman and racing executive Doug Atkins, who died last week after a long bout with cancer at age 76. The service will be held at Village Church in Rancho Santa Fe at noon.

Atkins was the publicity director at Sunland Park in the 1960s and had a 20-year stint with the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association in California, becoming its secretary-treasurer and chief operating officer. He also bred and raced numerous stakes winners.

He is survived by his wife, Lee, two daughters and five grandchildren.
