Cal Cup Puts the Spotlight on Cal-breds

ARCADIA, Calif. (Nov. 3, 2001) - An on-track crowd of 37,184 and a $1.2 million Pick Six pool contributed Saturday to a $19.8 million total handle for California Cup XII at Santa Anita.

The on-track crowd was an increase of 49 percent from last year's 24,957. Off- and on-track California attendance totaled 53,528, up 36 percent from last year's 39,210.

Total handle of $19,823,879 was up nearly 47 percent from last year's $13,515,945, while the Pick Six handle of $1.2 million more than tripled last year's $391,643.

On the track, the racing resulted in:
The upset of odds-on favorite in the Juvenile, Officer, by Yougottawanna;

Wins by six horses acquired through claims, including $250,000 Wells Fargo Cal Cup Classic winner Irisheyesareflying and $175,000 TVG Cal Cup Mile winner and millionaire Native Desert;

Two winners linked to the connections of double Breeders Cup Classic winner Tiznow - Ceeband in the Sprint and Cee Dreams in the Matron;

Four winners sired by stallions (Cutlass Reality, Lake George, Cee's Tizzy and Flying Continental) standing at Harris Farms;
Three winners ridden by Laffit Pincay, who had five in last year's Cal Cup;

Two winners ridden by Kent Desormeaux, including Irisheyesareflying.
