Bertrando Colt's Top Del Mar Yearling Sale
For the second consecutive year, a Bertrando foal produced from the stakes-placed Skip Trial mare When topped the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association's yearling sale at Del Mar Horse Park. The California-bred colt, a full brother to the filly that topped last year's sale, was purchased by Rollin Baugh, acting as agent for California owner Gary Biszantz, for $240,000 from the consignment of Debbie Sands.
Coupled with the sale topper in the first session, Bertrando had three of the top four selling yearlings for the two day sale.
"Bertrando is now one of the premier stallions,” Biszantz said. “I just wanted to have a good one."
"It is rewarding to have the sales-topping yearling for the second consecutive year, especially out of the same mare," Sands said.
Top-priced filly of the sale was Julie Adair’s Distinctive Wish, a daughter of Distinctive Cat purchased by Mack and Sandra Hall for $150,000 during the Tuesday session. From the second crop of Storm Cat’s son Distinctive Cat, the filly is out of stakes winner Wishful Nickle, by Plugged Nickle.
"The average did decline a bit from last year,” general manager Doug Burge said. “Overall, it is great to see such a stellar market for premium Cal-breds."
