ARCADIA, Calif., (Sunday April 30, 2000)After bobbling at the start, Spinlessjellyfish was content to rate nicely behind Road To Slew and Macward who were setting the early fractions before just getting up in the final stages to win the $175,000 Khaled Stakes by a neck. He completed the 1 1/16 miles on the turf course in 1:39 4/5.
Ridden by Chris McCarron and trained by Jenine Sahadi, the same connections who campaign Kentucky Derby contender The Deputy, the five-year-old son of Skywalker out of theDesert Wine mare Silky Sand Sammy picked up $105,000 for the victory. Spinelessjellyfish was bred in California by Cardiff Stud Farm and is owned by Cardiff Stud Farm and Mr. and Mrs. Barton Heller.
Pirate's Captiva Earns Maiden Stake Victory
ARCADIA, Calif., (Sunday April 30, 2000) The final race in the ten-race card of Cal-bred stakes was the filly running of the Maiden Stakes. The Grant Hoffmans trained, Pirate's Captiva, claimed the honor of earning black type in her first victory by besting Jeweled Pirate by a ½ length.
The three-year-old daughter of Pirate's Bounty rolled home in 1:17 3/5 over 6 1/2 furlongs under Kent Desormeaux. Pirate's Captiva, a Tailwind Racing Inc. homebred, earned $36,000 for the win. Pirate's Captiva is out of the Never Tabled mare Vackra Maj.
