Grey Memo Golden in Snow Chief
ARCADIA, Calif., (Sunday April 30, 2000) The main of event of Hollywood Gold Rush Day, the $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes, featured the finest three-year-old California-breds in the land. Hugh Hefner, the equine version, battled for the lead from the start out of the ten hole. After going three wide most of the way, Hugh Hefner finally assumed the lead on the backstrectch. The son of Bertrando opened up by three at the top of the stretch and appeared to be home free, but from out of the clouds came Grey Memo who took advantage of a leg weary Hugh Hefner mowing him down in final stages for a 1 ¼ victory.
"He ran his best race today, his "A" race," said trainer Warren Stute. "I thought they were going pretty fast up front and that they might come back to the field a little bit."
Under Matt Garcia, the Grey Memo completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 1/5.
"At the quarter pole, I knew I had a lot of horse," said Garcia. "He ran well, he is a nice son-of-a-gun."
He is actually a son of Memo who also sired La Femin, the winner of the B. Thoughtful Stakes. Mel Stute, Warren Stute's brother, trained Snow Chief, the all time Caifornia great the race is named affter. Grey Memo is out of B. Mozelle, who herself was sired by none other than Snow Chief.
Grey Memo is owned by Roy Manzani, Russ Sarno, and Ridgeley Farm. Pat Thompson's Ridgeley Farm is located in Hemet, California and is the home of Grey Memo's sire, Memo.
Guiding Force Takes Merial Stakes
ARCADIA, Calif., (Sunday April 30, 2000) Guiding Force broke on top and led all the way, under east coast invader Jorge Chavez, en route to a ½ victory over Know Sumthin in the $60,000 Merial Stakes. As the seventh race on the card, the Merial offered an interesting wagering challenge as all 11 horses entered were still looking to find the winners' circle for the first time.
Trained by John Sadler, the three-year-old son of Hollywood Brat, broke his maiden in fine fashion picking up black type and a $36,000 check for owners Mr. and Mrs. James Beckett. The Beckett's also bred the colt who is out of the Mo Bay mare Eddies Angel. Guiding Force completed the 6 ½ furlong distance in 1:16 1/5.
