Fifty-five California-bred juveniles are slated to sell at the Barretts March two-year-olds in training sale on Tuesday, March 14, at Fairplex Park in Pomona.
Last year, management of Barretts Equine Sales added a Cal-bred session to the March select sale that was well received by buyers and consignors alike. The 50-minute session offered 21 registered California-breds, of which 16 sold for gross receipts of $1,307,000 and an average of $81,688. Topping the session was an In Excess (Ire) filly that was bought by Padua Stables for $400,000, the highest price ever paid for a California-bred juvenile at public auction.
"We've always wanted to develop a market for California-breds and I feel that the group we have this year is the best group we have ever assembled," said Barretts president and general manager Gerald F. McMahon. "Not only do we have youngsters by popular California stallions like Bertrando, General Meeting, In Excess and Smokester, but we're broadening the choice by also offering California-breds by Kentucky stallions like Dynaformer, Fly So Free, Gilded Time, Honor and Glory and Peaks and Valleys. We think it's a very unique selection of Cal-breds."
Some of the Cal-breds offered during the March vendue came into the sale when the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association decided to merge its California-bred two-year-olds in training sale, originally scheduled for April 4, with Barretts' March and May sales. Consequently, CTBA Sales will not be conducting a two-year-old sale of its own this year.
Among some of the more notable Cal-breds slated to sell during the Barretts March sale is hip number 194, a gray colt from the Kirkwood Stables consignment.
